Both course records fell at Western States. Vincent Bouillard, who won UTMB in 2024, took the men’s race in 13:46:15. The previous best was 14:09:28, set in 2019. Francesco Puppi finished second in 13:51:08. Jennifer Lichter won the women’s race in 15:28:05, inside the 15:29:33 record from 2023, and Riley Brady was second in 15:42:14. Both records were set on a course with 5,500 metres of climbing, starting from Olympic Valley.
Only one of the 161 races at this distance held in the United States this year was larger. The field also travelled: finishers came from 28 countries, though 76.4% of them were from the United States.
The women’s race was stronger than the men’s at the front and slower through the middle. A quarter of the 68 women had finished by 18:44:11, while the men did not bring in the same share of their field until 22:41:57. By the middle of the field the order had reversed, and the median man finished ahead of the median woman.
The field slowed sharply with age. Half the finishers were 46 or older. Runners in their fifties had a median time of 27:53:41, 28% slower than the 21:44:40 of those in their thirties.
Of 370 starters, 322 reached the finish, a completion rate of 87.0%. The last of them came in at 29:58:51, inside the 30:00:00 limit.
