Oliver Shaw won the men’s race in 7:35:37, within 1.0% of the course best of 7:31:19. Ryan Gaughan was second in 7:58:00. Christie Morris took the women’s race in 9:43:29, with Kim Brechin second in 9:57:56.
The distance between those two winning times belongs to a pattern that has been moving in one direction. Between 2010 and 2015 the gap between the men’s and women’s winners stood at 12.9%. Since 2016 it has stood at 19.9%, so the front of the women’s race now sits further back from the front of the men’s than it did in the race’s earlier years.
The field grew sharply. There were 258 finishers, 25.2% more than at the last edition and 43.5% above the average for an edition of this race.
Behind the winners, the two races drew much closer together. Women made up 66 of the 258 finishers, and their median finisher came home in 13:25:55. The median man finished in 12:29:24. The gap that was wide at the front had narrowed considerably by the middle of the pack, where most of the people reading this will find themselves.
The chart below shows a field that slowed steadily with age, though not steeply. The median finisher was 46. Those aged 60 and over had a median time of 13:52:35, against 11:59:50 for the under-30s, a difference of 15.7% between the oldest and youngest groups.
The last woman came in at 15:58:42, inside the 16:00:00 limit. The last man finished in 16:36:51, past it, because the limit was published but not enforced to the second, which is ordinary at this kind of event.
